Here is a comment we recently received from a reader/interested party explaining their perspective on trademarks when domain names are involved. This is of particular interest because it appears to give the view of web developers from China.
Thanks a lot for your good suggestion of .com domain.
Anyway, our chinese, dont’ want to buy or register any .com domain,as you know if we buy any .com domain, sooner or later it will be robbed by USA companies through ICANN,such as rc3m.com,cnnews.com,tigercool.com,…etc,all knows that they are abuse of trademark.
We don’t have enough time to check the hundreds of thousands of trademarks before we register a .com domain,we don’t know whether my register name will “infringe” any companies trademark or contain the several letters of any trademark like gezip.com .
What we register is the .cn domain which can’t be abused robbed by USA companies.
If you have good .cn domain, please feel free to present to us.Thanks a lot.
There have been a number of instances that people have registered trademarked names or typos of trademarked names and they have ended up having their names taken from them after a complaint is filed. This comment appears to insinuate that the registering of these names is purely coincidental when that is obviously not the case most of the time. I particularly like the defense that they don’t have time to see if a name is trademarked. This argument falls a little flat on me.

Its a little late, but here is the much promised look at some development ideas for some available five letter pronounceable .com domains that were listed yesterday.
AwBig.com - This could be useful for anything from adult purposes to a number of other products. It could even be used by the A&W restaurant company.
Krewt.com - Would make a great name for a company with anything doing with salad. Sounds like crouton.
DesiF.com - Great for anyone named Desi, especially if they have a last name that starts with “F”.
GEZip.com - Great for any number of products associated with the General Electric company. Also works well for zipped file transfering software or services.
eDazy.com - Great for someone named Daisy or something with a flower motif.
DIYij.com - DIY is the popular abbreviation for “Do-It-Yourself”, now you just need something that IJ can stand for.
Good luck finding the name of your dreams.

There was a live auction yesterday (Thursday, May 8th) over in the chatroom at NamePros. It was a lively event, peaking with about 80-90 people present (counting moderators). Some domains achieved moderately high prices and there were some bargains gotten too. There were also a number of lots that didn’t meet their reserves.
The final numbers look pretty good:
-Over 50 lots were sold
-The most expensive lot sold was a lot of 25 LLL.mobi names that went for $2100.
-Many many LLLL.com names were for sale in this auction, our favorite was SLAQ.com which went for $405.
One disclaimer, an option the seller may choose to enact on live auctions at NamePros is the buy-out clause option. If the seller wishes not sell at the final price, he is required to pay a buy-out fee to the top bidder equal to 20% of their bid (capped at $8). So, some of the lots that say sold, may in fact not have been sold.
In the end, it was a great auction.
Thanks Namepros!

Barack Obama has to a certain extent taken the United States by storm. He is still technically in a race with Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States, but it looks like all but certain that he will be the candidate.
He is all over the television, speaking about hope and changes that need to be made. No matter what your specific political beliefs, it is hard to argue that he is not a great orator. He inspires a massive amount of people who cheer him on and wave those blue and white “Obama ‘08 - Change We Can Believe In” signs.

You can continue to view Barack Obama’s message of change at his website (BarackObama.com), that is once you click past all the donation solicitation screens. So, with millions of dollars in campaign donations to rely on and some of the brightest minds in the political business advising him, it probably goes without saying that they thought ahead and registered the domain name “ChangeWeCanBelieveIn.com”, right?Wrong.
If you go to that website (warning: some material may be offensive) you’ll find that it is hosting an anti-abortion site and features a very large and negative look at Barack Obama. Further research shows that the domain name wasn’t registered until November of 2007… just last year, roughly six months ago.
It is safe to say, that had the Obama campaign had someone familiar with the domaining market on board that this site would look much different.

When it comes to establishing your online presence, you have to build a foundation before you can get going right away. There are things you need to look into before actually putting your website online for everyone to see. These things make sure that your site starts out with the best possible chance to succeed.
Before you start with something like web design or anything else, you need to select a domain name. There are a couple things that you can try in your domain name selection. Find something memorable and catchy, if possible find something short, in the 4-7 character range. A short memorable name means people have less of a chance to forget the name of your website. Another thing to do when selecting a domain name is, if possible, select a domain name that has the niche that your site is in spelled out in the name. If you have a real estate site you are developing, see if you can find something available with the words real estate in the domain name itself.
Now that you have your domain name, you need web hosting. Web hosting allows the content of your site to stay up and online without you doing anything. A web hosting package is a necessary part of having a website and making it accessible to potential traffic and browsers.
Starting a website is like anything else, don’t proceed until you’ve got everything ready.
